North Central Expressway Reconstruction Project Timeline Released
DALLAS — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has unveiled a comprehensive timeline for the long-awaited North Central Expressway reconstruction project, which will affect a 4.2-mile stretch from LBJ Freeway to Loop 12. The $847 million infrastructure overhaul is scheduled to begin in March 2024 and continue through December 2027.
The project will focus on widening US-75 from four to six lanes in each direction, rebuilding aging overpasses, and implementing improved drainage systems to address flooding issues that have plagued the area during heavy rainfall. Key intersections at Mockingbird Lane, University Boulevard, and Lovers Lane will see significant reconstruction.
"This is the most comprehensive infrastructure investment our community has seen in decades," said Maria Rodriguez, a Preston Center business owner who has operated her family restaurant near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Central Expressway for 18 years. "While we're concerned about the short-term impact on foot traffic, we understand this will benefit everyone in the long run."
The reconstruction will be completed in three phases to minimize disruption to the estimated 180,000 daily commuters who travel this corridor. Phase One, beginning in March, will focus on the southbound lanes from LBJ Freeway to Royal Lane. Phase Two will address the stretch from Royal Lane to Mockingbird Lane, while the final phase will complete work from Mockingbird Lane to Loop 12.
TxDOT officials anticipate significant traffic delays during peak hours, particularly affecting residents commuting from Highland Park, University Park, and neighborhoods along Greenville Avenue. Alternative routes through Deep Ellum and along Skillman Street are expected to experience increased congestion.
"We're implementing a comprehensive traffic management plan that includes extended hours for construction crews and weekend work to accelerate the timeline," explained TxDOT District Engineer James Mitchell. "We're also coordinating with local businesses to ensure emergency vehicle access and customer accessibility remain priorities."
Local automotive service providers are preparing for increased demand as drivers seek alternative routes that may put additional wear on their vehicles. Faith Auto Glass Dallas has already reported a 15% increase in windshield repair requests from debris on construction-affected roadways in other parts of the city.
The project will also include enhanced pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, with new sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes connecting to the Katy Trail system. Smart traffic signals and improved lighting will be installed throughout the corridor.
TxDOT will host public information meetings monthly at the Preston Center Community Room, beginning February 15, 2024. Real-time traffic updates and construction progress reports will be available through the agency's mobile app and website.
Funding for the project comes from a combination of federal highway funds, state transportation allocations, and local municipal bonds approved by Dallas voters in 2022.
